Krystle was born on the 25th of November 1983 mother and father Christopher and Patricia Smith. She was the only sister of Stephen and Darren. She attended St Michaels National School in Arklow for her primary school education then went on the St Marys college for Secondary education. She played the violin and piano and had been a member of the Arklow Girl Guides.
In January 2001 she started complaining about a pain in her back, we sent her to the Doctor who did not take it seriously at all.
Then on the 3rd of May 2001 a swelling appeared on her 9th rib, the Doctor again said there is no need for alarm. We had it x-rayed and the casualty officer on duty said there is nothing on the xray. So we had two medical people saying there was nothing wrong.
We never heard until the 13th of June 2001 that Krystle was something very seriously wrong.
She was diagnosed on the 21st of June 2001 with ewing’s Sarcoma an aggressive cancer. Krystle was treated in St Vincents Hospital Dublin with Chemo 6 rounds of Chemo I.V.A.D. She finished this on the 31st of October 2001 and she was called 9 weeks later for radiation treatment.
During the radiation treatment Krystle relapsed and no treatment was given, no drugs for the relapse. She died on the 15th of March 2002 after a nine months after the diagnoses.
Krystle fought a brave battle which would put strong brave men to shame for such a young person.
She was truly remarkable.
